Founded in 2008, the San Francisco-headquartered firm runs a cloud-based telephony infrastructure that allows web programmers to integrate phone calls and SMS messages into applications. More than 400,000 companies – including Coca-Cola, Uber and eBay among others – use Twilio.

London: a launchpad into Europe

The company decided on London because of the city’s mix of global brands and ambitious startups. It was the right choice and London has become the perfect launchpad into Europe. Since 2012, European revenues at Twilio have grown at 300 per cent a year.

“From North America, we wanted to expand across Europe, using the UK as a bridgehead,” explains James Parton, director at Twilio Europe.

“We also wanted to take customers with us. A lot of existing US customers had approached us and asked when we were going to be in the UK. For a US company, London is typically the starting point in terms of language, culture and business practices.”

London’s successful fast-growing tech community has played a key part in Twilio’s European growth.

Parton adds that London’s successful fast-growing tech community has played a key part in Twilio’s European growth.

Parton explains how this helped Twilio grow its European business: “Our initial target audience was very much the startup community and as we expand to reach developers within larger companies and agencies, London remains the most fertile place for us.”

This has meant that London has acted as the ideal springboard for Twilio, he adds. “We’ve built our visibility in London and are now building it across Europe by working with both the startup community and larger enterprises across Europe.”
